[Wisner, Benjamin B.]. Review of "The New Divinity Tried;" or an Examination of Mr. Rand's Strictures on a Sermon delivered by the Rev. C. G. Finney, on Making a New Heart. Boston: Peirce and Parker, 1832. First Edition. [12080]

Removed, no wrapper, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches, 44 pages. Good. Pamphlet.

Charles Grandison Finney preached a sermon on Making a New Heart, and one of the attendees, the Rev. Asa Rand, took notes and then published a critical review of the sermon in his periodical, The Volunteer: Devoted to the Promotion of Revivals, Evangelical Doctrines, and Congregationalism.

This is B. B. Wisner's response to the critical review and a somewhat in-depth review of the theology of Rev. Finney. While Wisner does not categorically agree with Finney in all matters, or in his choice of language, he does not find any serious errors in his beliefs.

Attributed to Benjamin Blydenburg Wisner, D.D. (1794-1835), born at Goshen, N.Y., educated at Princeton Theological Seminary, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at New Brunswick, N.J., and afterwards of the Old South Church in Boston. He was active in the causes of education and of missions, serving as both a traveling organizer for, and secretary of, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
