The Andover Fuss : or, Dr. Woods versus Dr. Dana, on the Imputation of Heresy, against Professor Park, respecting the doctrine of Original Sin. Boston: Tappan and Whittemore, 1853. First Edition. [12094]
Removed, no wrapper, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches, 31 pp., a little pencil marginalia. Good. Pamphlet.
A review of the controversy regarding the doctrine of Original Sin as promulgated in the Westminster Standards, but then rejected by the "orthodox" theologians of Andover. Our anonymous reviewer shows, from their own words, that Dr. Woods and Dr. Dana only accept the Standards with reservations, and that they did not uphold the "ultra" conception of them as did their ancestors.
"What, then, shall we say of Dr. Dana - his visions of heresy and fountains of tears? - his eulogy of Dr. Woods, and crimination of Professor Park, for their contrasted virtue and delinquency respecting the Westminster Catechism, and its doctrine of Original Sin, vital only in its entireness? Is that eulogy merited? Is that crimination just? Is the one to be canonized for his Westminster saintship, in advance of his transition, and the other doomed to the odium theologicum, for Westminster heresy, in his crescent manhood and spreading fame? But the story of Dr. Dana is incredible. It rests on no responsible name but his own, and stands most plainly contradicted by the testimony of the most competent witness, Dr. Woods himself, in a deposition attested by a third of a century, and confirmed by a mass of contemporaneous and decisive proof." pp. 23-24.
