Maximilian Samson Friedrich Schoell (1766-1833), diplomat, antiquarian and bookseller. We find reference to the author being early in life a bookseller in Berlin, "and subsequently at Basle in Switzerland...from the knowledge of treaties which he exhibited in his collection relating to the Confederation of the Rhine, named by the King of Prussia, Counsellor of the Prussian Legation at Paris, and favorably noticed by Alexander of Russia." - Littell's Living Age (1850). A note at the Library of Congress website says that he moved from Germany to Paris in 1803 to establish his own bookstore.
