We find this hymnal associated with the Presbyterian church. It was attacked in print by fellow Presbyterian the Rev. Nathan S. S. Beman (who was often on the attack); Beman had a competing hymnal at the time.

The publisher, Henry Perkins, was also the compiler, and responded to Beman with Review of a Pamphlet, Entitled 'The Church Psalmist,' published by himself ca. 1844.

With a signed provenance card from the music collection of A. Merril Smoak, Jr., DWS.
