Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899), American evangelist; b., Mass. In 1870 he met Ira Sankey, who became associated with him in evangelistic campaigns in the U.S. and in Britain. In 1856 Moody left Boston to engage in missionary work as a Congregationalist in Chicago. His Sunday school in North Market Hall developed into the Illinois Street Church, of which he was lay pastor; it was later named the Moody Memorial Church. In Massachusetts, Moody founded Northfield Seminary (1879) and Mt. Hermon School (1881), which were merged (1887) as the Northfield Mt. Hermon School. He also opened (1889) a Bible institute (now the Moody Bible Inst.) in Chicago. He was one of the most successful American evangelists.
