Rebecca Jones (1739-1817), b. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her parents belonged to the Church of England, but while still a young teenager Rebecca was drawn to the Society of Friends, and adopted the Quaker religion at the age of sixteen. Just two years later she began to preach in their meetings, and was soon recognized as a minister. Jones became a school teacher and administrator in 1761, a position she maintained until 1783, when she traveled to England, and over the next several years to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, preaching and visiting schools. She returned to Philadelphia in 1788, where she opened a sundry shop for self-support, while continuing her preaching ministry throughout the Delaware Valley and into New England. Some of her manuscripts are in the collection at Brynmawr College near Philadelphia.
