"The life of a missionary in the interior of Southern Africa is usually attended with stirring incident and adventure. Whilst pursuing the great work of evangelist he meets with game and wild beasts in the open country; with wild and degraded men in town and village. He uses waggons [sic], guns, horses, and oxen; he handles trowel, plumb-line, adze, saw, and spirit-level, as well as the usual implements of a minister's study." - Preface.

Rev. John Mackenzie (1835-1899), b Moray Co., Scotland; d. Kimberley, Cape Colony, Africa. As a missionary Mackenzie was "a constant champion of the rights of Africans in Southern Africa and a proponent of British intervention to curtail the spread of Boer influence, especially in the lands of the Tswana ('Bechuana' in older variant orthography) peoples." His missionary work began in 1858 and encouraged the formation of a British Protectorate, which was established in 1884, with Mackenzie briefly serving as its deputy commissioner. - see entry at Britannica online.

The Bechwanaland Protectorate became the modern Republic of Botswana in 1966.
