Pierre Lyautey (1893-1976), French writer, journalist, & senior civil servant. He was an officer in the 19th Dragoons during WWI, and after the war served in the administration of Morocco; in 1921 he joined the cabinet of General Henri Joseph Eugene Gouraund, High Commissioner in Syria and Lebanon, firs as head of the financial services and then as head of the civil cabinet. He was an avid traveler, visiting Soviet Russia, the United States, Near and Middle East, India, Indochina, and North Africa. His career continued as a journalist, civil administrator, and lecturer.
