"In presenting the life-story of his fellow missionary with all the interest and affection a devoted comradeship would prompt, Dr. Lucas permits his hero to tell a large part of the story himself in his letters written to his family in the home land. Out of these come such strength of conviction and beauty of spirit that, though unconscious it may be to the writer, he therein best reveals his true self. The fifteen years of Mr. Fullerton's missionary service began in 1850, and continued until his death in 1865, and therefore covered the tragic period of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The latter half of the volume is made up of a series of graphic narratives written by Mr. Fullerton on this subject for the Foreign Missionary Magazine of the Presbyterian Church U. S. A." - William P. Finney's review in the Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society (March, 1930).
