John Frost (1800-1859), b. Kennebunk, Maine; d. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A teacher and historian, Frost was educated at Bowdoin College and Harvard University, and became principal of the Mayhew School in Boston. In 1838 he moved to Philadelphia, where he was professor of English Literature at the Central High School.

Frost was a prolific author, and sometimes had his students help with his research. This angered some parents, so he left off teaching and devoted himself to writing. He produced some 200 books, many on the American Revolution, and also travelogues, textbooks, nature books, and several on military topics.

His A Pictorial History of the World (1843) earned him an honorary LL.D. from Marshall College.
