A bound collection of 38 issues from 1834 and 1838, two of which are incomplete, and not in any particular order. This is not a complete run but a selection of issues from the time period. The spine titles are "IL VAPORE / ANNO I 1834." Bound with a tooled leather spine having raised bands, dark burgundy cloth boards, 22 x 14 cm, each issue averages 8 pp., two leaves are closely trimmed at the fore-edge with the loss of some letters. Tight, clean. Very good. Hardcover.
Illustrated with text engravings - mainly portraits - and one b/w plate in one of the "Passatempo" issues.
Il Vapore is rather scarce, with only one holding at Worldcat, in NYC. Passatempo has no recorded holdings. We find reference to "Il Vapore" described as "a Sicilian magazine for the fairer sex," and to "Passatempo" as a similar publication, both emitted in Palermo, Sicily. The portraits include Alessandro Manzoni, Vincenzo Bellini, Carlo Gemmellaro, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Antonio Gagini, Pietro Novelli, and Briseide Gervasi.
