Kathryn Rader Hawthorne (1891-1980), sister to the better-known Paul Rader, raised in the Methodist Church, sailed as a missionary to Sumatra in 1936.

"Mrs. Hawthorne pioneered in Sumatra, one of the Netherland East Indies, in missionary work among the jungle tribes. She was the only missionary in Central Sumatra and was used by the Lord to open up the Mamak tribe to the Gospel...She was interred by the Japanese for three and one-half years on the island." - publisher.

An account of her missionary work and captivity. The book ends with her return to New York City after the war on the U. S. S. General Patrick with 3,600 GI's and officers.

PP. 137-185 is her account of being held prisoner by the Japanese during WWII.
