Giovanni Gherardini (1778-1861), "Milanese philologist and lexicographer, who played a part in the debate over Romanticism with his translation (from the French) of A. W. Schlegel's Corso di letteratura drammatica (1817), though the notes reflect his own eclectic stance. He also wrote libretti, including that for Rossini's La gazza ladra (1817). - The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature.
