Mary Ninde Gamewell (1858-1947), b. Adams, NY; d. Clifton Springs, NY. Her father, Wiliam Xavier Ninde, was a Methodist minister, college president, and was elected Bishop later in life. Mary, along with her husband Francis Dunlap Gamewell, was a missionary with the Methodist Church to China for many years, beginning in 1909.

This book became a standard textbook on China missions for the Central Committee on the United Study of Foreign Missions. It focuses on the history of Christian missionary work in one city, beginning with Robert Morrison in 1807.
