Emma Elizabeth Brown (1847-1937), b. Concord, NH; the daughter of a prominent bookseller and collector, John Frost Brown. Her father influenced her early love of books and literature, and encouraged her literary efforts. She contributed poetry and prose to various literary and religious magazines, including to the Atlantic Monthly and Littell's Living Age, and wrote books suitable for Sunday School and other reading. She also wrote biographies of Washington, Grant, Garfield, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. In addition, she was a noted watercolor artist; it is remembered that the demand for them exceeded their supply.
