Tullio conte Dandolo (1801-1870), Italian historian & author. He inherited a large fortune in 1819, spent some years as a profligate, before settling down to political and historical studies of his turbulent times. He conveyed his religious and political views "through literary or philosophical sketches, descriptions of travels, cities and monuments; on the other hand, reflecting on ancient history or nascent Christianity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the last two centuries of European or American civilization...he tried to give some information rather than a critical commentary, for the best knowledge of the past." - translation from Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, vol. 32.
