The Lateran Council of 1725 was convened by Pope Benedict XIII during a Jubilee Year. It was an attempt to improve preaching in the Church, to correct inefficiencies in the distribution of ecclesiastical benefits, and to institute the reform of some church practices and governance. The Pope, a Dominican of monastic habits, attempted to curtail excesses and the decadent lifestyles of the Italian priesthood, abolished the lottery in Rome and the Papal States, built several hospitals for the poor, but was undercut in his efforts by politically stronger underlings.
