Selim Hobart Peabody (1829-1903), b. Rockingham, Vermont; d. St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated at the University of Vermont in 1852, and held professorships in various institutions in the fields of mathematics, physics, and engineering. From 1880 to 1891 he was president of the University of Illinois.

Peabody held important posts in the World's Columbian Exposition, the Paris Exposition, and the Pan-American Exposition. He was president of the Chicago Academy of Sciences (1892-1895), president of the National Council of Education (1889-1891), and associate editor of the International Encyclopedia
