Fifty years of Christian ministry by the Rev. Dr. Henry Wilkes of Montreal is the occasion for this celebration and gift. Funds were raised to give as a gift to Dr. Wilkes and his family. A list of contributors is within this pamphlet. Speeches given at the celebration are printed herein.
Rev. Dr. Henry Wilkes (1805-1886), b. Birmingham, England; d. Montreal, Canada. He emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1820. In 1828 he went to Glasgow, Scotland, to study for the ministry under the Rev. Dr. Wardlaw. Wilkes served as the pastor of the Albany Church in Edinburgh for three years, before being sent back to Canada as the representative of the Colonial Missionary Society. He became pastor of the St. Maurice Street Church, Montreal, which in 1845 moved to Beaver Hall Hill, where it became known as the Zion Church. Wilkes later became principal of the Canada Congregational College. He was for over fifty years a minister of the gospel, and secretary of the Colonial Missionary Society of the Congregational Union of England and Wales.
