Whiting, Lyman. A Sermon, preached at the Dedication of the Meeting-House of the Lawrence Street Congregational Society, Lawrence, October 11, 1848. With Historical Notices of the Church and Society. Lawrence, [Massachusetts]: Hayes, Printer, Courier Office, 1849. First Edition. [12104]

Removed, no wrapper, 8 1/2 x 5 inches, 16 pages. Good. Pamphlet.

The text is Isaiah 26:7, "For mine house shall be called an house of Prayer for all people."

The author contrasts this with what a church should not be, it should not be a school for intellectual culture, it is not a place for refining sentiment or for cultivating taste, it is not a house of theological debate. It is instead an house of Truth, an house of Faith, an house of Emotion, with prayer being the main element. P. 13-16 is an history of the congregation.

Rev. Lyman Whiting (1817-1906), b. North Brookfield, Massachusetts,  Whiting graduated at Andover Theological Seminary in 1842, became assistant pastor of the orthodox Lawrence Street Congregational Church (1847), and was pastor of several other churches in New England and New York during his ministry. He also served as chaplain for the Massachusetts State Senate.
