Morehead, James T. Report of the Committee on Retrenchment of the Senate of the United States, made by the Hon. James T. Morehead, Chairman, On the 15th of June, 1844. Washington: Printed by Gales & Seaton, 1844. First Edition. [12492]

Removed, no wrapper or binding, 9 x 5 1/2 inches, 448 clean pp. With an extensive index. Good. Disbound.

28th Congress, 1st Session, Senate Doc. 399.

A detailed investigation into government patronage and waste, conducted during the previous decade and up to 1844. Contents include reports from every department of the federal government as well as the separate reports of Calhoun and of Benton on executive patronage, which include speeches by Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and other prominent Senators of the time.

Also, Report from the Committee on Printing of the Senate, on the subject of public printing, binding, and engraving.

Then a message from President Van Buren, with statement of removals from office of persons who derived their appointments from the President, from 1789 to 1840.

The same then from President John Tyler, of removals from 1829 to 1841.

These are followed by charts showing the growth of the number of persons employed and their salaries, for several decades previous, and include all sections of the government, including the military. These charts are pp. 165-319.

The lists of removals give the names of each person, their position or rank, and the date of removal. The military section begins with the year 1803 for the army and 1799 for the navy.

This is an amazing record showing very detailed information about the government of the United States in the first half of the 19th century.
