Horatio Southgate (1812-1894), was a missionary bishop to the Ottoman Empire, sent by the American Episcopal Church. He encountered American Congregational missionaries sent by the ABCFM and accused them of adopting some Episcopal uses, such as the prayer book, a liturgy, clerical dress, and the sign of the cross in baptism. He accuses the Congregational missionaries of purposefully confusing the Armenians and leading them to believe that they were of the English Church, whose practices Rev. Southgate deemed less offensive to the members of the Greek church that they were trying to convert. He put these accusations in print in New England.
This is the response to these charges by the Congregational missionaries. They deny all, they give proofs and reasons for their denials.
