Newly sewn into an acid-free wrapper, 7 x 4 1/2 inches, 19 pages. Good. Pamphlet.

The text is I Corinthians 16:2, "Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay up in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."

Four meaningful descriptions are derived from the text, followed by six persuasions to adopt the Biblical principles regarding charitable giving. Pp. 12-19 is a letter by Elisha Yale describing missions supported by Biblical giving, including Foreign Missions, the Bible Society, Home Missions, and the Education Society.

Elisha Yale, D.D. (1780-1853), born at Lee, Massachusetts, converted at age 19, he studied for the ministry first with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Shephard, and afterwards with Rev. Dr. Perkins. He became the Presbyterian minister at Kingsborough, New York, in 1803.

“A revival of religion commenced immediately under his labors, and continued without any abatement a whole year…In 1813, 1814, and 1822, from 1829 to 1832, and in 1838 and 1839, religion was extensively revived, and large additions were made to the church, under his ministry.” – Sprague.

He was chosen to be a corporate member of the American Board of Foreign Missions in 1838. He never had a college education, but was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree by Union College in 1840. Sprague was personally acquainted with Yale, and considered him to be a faithful, steady Presbyterian minister, fully committed to the Westminster Standards and Presbyterian doctrine. He also considered him to be a great friend of missions and genuine revival.
