"It has been the aim of the Author of this Tract, to adapt its suggestions to the situation of Clergymen labouring in the country, rather than of those who enjoy the advantages afforded for Sabbath School operations in large towns, though it is hoped such may find important hints in it."
The writer, "Owen," won a premium of fifty dollars for this essay. He was, presumably, either a student or a faculty member at Princeton.
After praising the "Sabbath School system" as an effective means of religious instruction, the author states that its use must be expanded.
"The time has therefore come, when this mode of religious instruction must be prosecuted with vigour, and placed within the reach of the whole population of the United States. Somebody must act, and must act soon; and that not in a desultory and unconnected manner, but in concert, and on a large scale; a scale bearing some proportion to the blessings that we wish, and the evils that we fear, for our beloved country."
He goes on to explain how the schools may be established, the system of instruction to be used. the qualifications of teachers, the best question books, &c.
