This third edition has more material than the first two, includes all of the contents of the first two, and is expanded to include all documents up to 1818.  An essential reference for research and for understanding the new nation of the United States of America. 

Signed by Robert C. Winthrop on the ffep and title page. Also laid in on a single sheet is the signature of James Bowdoin (1752-1811), American statesman and one of the founders of Bowdoin College.

Twelve volumes in polished calf, boards with blind scroll borders, red & black leather title labels, old paper labels at the top of the spines, institutional emboss stamps on the title pages and on a few text pages. Each volume 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Some joints are weak, and there are five detached boards in the set. Texts are clean; about 500 pages in each volume. Good. Hardcover.

The former owner was Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894), US Representative to Congress from Massachusetts (1840-1850), Speaker of the House for one term, US Senator from Massachusetts for one term, political ally of Daniel Webster.

The documents of the infant nation, beginning with George Washington's first Speech to the Congress of the United States and ending with President Monroe's Address to the Congress regarding the Occupation of Amelia Island. These volumes includes speeches and messages of the Presidents, Extracts from the Journal of Congress, memorials sent to Congress by American citizens, and much correspondence.

A record of many early events of the new nation, including foreign diplomacy, trade, interactions with Indian tribes, the Genet affair and relations with France, British privateers, The War of 1812, Barbary pirates, the Floridas, national boundaries, the Louisiana Purchase, the impressments of American sailors, &c.

The volumes cover the period from 1789 to 1818. The final volume has an index to the set and a list of subscribers.
