Rev. Abiel Holmes (1763-1837), b. Woodstock, Conn.; d. Cambridge, Mass. Rev, Holmes was a graduate of Yale College (1783), became pastor of churches in South Carolina and Georgia, and was the pastor of the First Church in Cambridge from 1792 to 1832. Rev. Holmes was one of the founding members of the Massachusetts Bible Society. He is remembered also as an historian, the author of Annals of America (1805), a biography of Ezra Stiles, and he was the Corresponding Secretary of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1803, and of the American Antiquarian Society in 1813.
