The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the narrowest region of Mexico between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It had been considered for an overland route to connect the two oceans before the Panama Canal was proposed some 25 years later. An overland railroad route was designed and operated, opening eventually in 1907.
