"It is just that the compilers and publishers of this work should acknowledge their obligations to the individuals from whom the necessary materials have been gained, and they have the pleasure in naming, as the principal of these, the Rev. Mr. Bowley; who has already done so much for the benefit of the Church of India." - Advertisement.

Rev. William Bowley (c1780-1843), pioneer evangelist and church planter in India, born in India to a British soldier and Indian mother. "Bowley was proud of his Indian heritage and language skills and would not tolerate racism in any form. Originally a fifer in the East India Company's army, he was a successful businessman when converted through the influence of Daniel Corrie. From 1814 to 1843, supported by the Church Missionary Society, he was a tireless street evangelist. He itinerated along the Ganges...and gave pastoral oversight of converts." He was ordained by Bishop Reginald Heber of Calcutta in 1825. see entry in Anderson, Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions.
