Godbey, W. B. Pentecost. Cincinnati, Ohio: God's Revivalist Office, ca. 1910. [12016]

Tan wrappers, a bit soiled, small number label on front, 7 3/8 x 5 1/8 inches, 32 clean pp. Good. Pamphlet.

Godbey likens some of the Jewish ceremonial gatherings to camp meetings, and calls the Day of Pentecost in the New Testament a camp meeting. He writes against ceremonies and ordinances being means of salvation, and takes the Campbellites to task for teaching people to believe that baptism grants salvation. He explains the events of the Day of Pentecost as he understands them, and says that modern tongues-speaking is not Biblical and full of troubles.

"The Holiness Movement in the last few years has suffered awfully from the counterfeit Tongues Movement. The devil has made a wonderful success in counterfeiting the gift of tongues, because in its very nature it is inscrutable. Because you do not know it, Satan can put off anything on you he pleases, and fool you...There is no unknown tongue, never has been and never will be. Hence all this talk about having an unknown tongue is bunkum, only Satan's trickery to run people into fanaticism and make them backslide." - p. 14.

He goes on to teach that every Christian must have their own Pentecost, but it does not lead to speaking in tongues, but in personal holiness. He asserts that the Tongues Movement is Spiritualism, or devil-worship. p. 17.

William Baxter Godbey (1833-1920), b. Pulaski County, KY; d. Cincinnati, OH [Jones puts his death at Zarephath, NJ]. Godbey was raised among the Campbellites, but became a pastor and evangelist with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

"He was converted in a revival in 1849 and licensed to preach in 1853 by the Kentucky Conference. He served as president of Harmonia College in Percyville, Kentucky (1859-1869). He experienced entire sanctification in December 1868 and became a strong Holiness advocate." Godbey led revivals in Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas, as well as making four international tours (1895, 1899, 1905, 1912), "spending much of his time in Palestine." He wrote more than 200 books and pamphlets. - quotations and info from Kostlevy, The A to Z of the Holiness Movement.
