William Earl Dodge (1805-1883), b. Hartford, Connecticut; d. New York City. Dodge was the co-founder of one of the largest mining companies in the United States, and also had holdings in timber and railroads.
"Considered an energetic and conservative man, Dodge was noted for his civic activities and his efforts on behalf of religious and temperance societies. He also served one term as a member of the U.S. Congress (1866–67), where he was an outspoken advocate of moderate postwar Reconstruction policies." - Britannica online.
He was an active supporter of Indian Rights and a founding member of the YMCA. In his youth he was influenced by the revival work of the Rev. Asahel Nettleton, and throughout his life Dodge was a serious Christian.
