Paige, Reed. Obedience to the Laws of Civil Rulers, a Duty Enjoined in the Scriptures : A Sermon, delivered at Hancock, August 20th, 1812; the Day recommended by the President of the United States, for "Public Humiliation and Prayer". Concord, N. H.: Printed by I. & W. R. Hill, 1812. First Edition. [11615]

Sewn into a new acid-free wrapper, 8 x 5 inches, 27 clean pp, Good. Pamphlet.

Two sermons on the text Matthew 22:21, "Render therefore unto Cesar the things which are Cesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."

War against Great Britain had been declared, and President Monroe called for a national day of prayer and fasting. Rev. Paige defends the call to war, somewhat unusual for a minister of New England, for New England in general opposed the war as detrimental to her economy of trade.

The great sin of which Rev. Paige calls upon his hearers to repent, is that of speaking evil of rulers. "It existed under the administration of Washington - of Adams - of Jefferson - and it still exists. Washington's character was assailed; Adams' reproached; Jefferson's blasted; and of Madison what shall we say?...of his political character scarcely any thing has been too bad to say...This is a sine of which we are guilty as a people; and it is a sin which threatens to destroy the invaluable privileges we enjoy as citizens." - pp. 23-24.

Reed Paige (1764-1816), b. Hardwick, MA; d. Hancock, NH. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, and was the first settled minister in Hancock, New Hampshire, having been ordained over the Congregational church there in 1791.
