This is a later printing of the second edition, which was first published in 1853. The first edition was issued in 1844.

Everett Emmett Guild, b. 1811 at Delhi, NY. His father was an Episcopalian and his mother a Congregationalist, both sincere church members. Apart from the common schools, Everett's only education was personal study under the direction of the Rev. Stephen R. Smith, a prominent Universalist clergyman, then of Clinton, NY. He was remembered as an athletic man who enjoyed physical sports, as a debater, as one with a fair, respectful, and gentlemanly manner.
