"This volume is not a mere abridgment of the Memoirs of Messrs. Robert and James Alexander Haldane, by Alexander Haldane, Esq., of London, son of the last-named gentleman, but a work written for the American Tract Society...It is hoped the work may tend to increase the piety and zeal of Christians, and to prove to others that evangelical religion lies at the foundation of all that is useful and happy." - J. B., Philadelphia, 1858.

Roberts attributes this work to Joseph Belcher, D.D.

The compiler or author is Joseph Belcher (1794-1859), an English Baptist and sometime secretary of the Baptist Union, who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1844, where he was pastor of a church. A prolific author, he contributed over 200 books to the press, including a biography of George Whitefield, the Baptist Pulpit of the United States, and a History of the Religious Denominations in the United States. He was also the editor of the Works of the Rev. Robert Hall.
