George Bush (1796-1859), b. Norwich, VT; d. Rochester, NY. An accomplished scholar, he graduated from Dartmouth in 1818, studied theology at Princeton, and was a tutor there in 1823-4. He was the author of a commentary on the Bible, still deemed useful by many.

After serving as a Presbyterian pastor and then missionary in Indiana, Bush became professor of Hebrew and Oriental Literature at New York University. Among his writings is the book, The Valley of Vision; or, The Dry Bones of Israel Revived: in it he called for the restoration of the Jews to the Holy Land, and of their conversion to Christianity. In 1845 he embraced the teachings of Swedenborg, and wrote in defense of that sect, and became editor of the New Church Repository.
