General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888), career United States Army Officer, Union general and close associate of General U. S. Grant. He was described by President Lincoln as "A brown, chunky little chap, with a long body, short legs, not enough neck to hang him, and such long arms that if his ankles itch he can scratch them without stooping." His daring successes during the American Civil War propelled him rapidly up the chain of command. He was a hero of the Union at war's end.
