Eugene de Mazenod (1782-1867), b. Aix-en-Provence, France; d. Marseille, France; Feast Day, May 21. de Mazenod was a French aristocrat and Roman Catholic Bishiop, canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1995. His family had become refugees in Italy during the French Revolution, due to their status and wealth. After settling in Venice, they were forced again to flee, first to Naples and then to Sicily. In 1802 Eugene returned to France, living the life of a rich young nobleman, and 5 years later he experienced a religious conversion that led him to prepare for the priesthood. His subsequent career was dedicated to ministering to the poor and to prisoners, founding the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, an order granted papal approval in 1826. This ministry quickly spread to other countries. In 1832 he wsa made bishop of Icosium, in 1837 bishop of Marseille, a position he held until his death in 1861.
