James Richards, D. D. (1767-1843), b. New Canaan, CT; d. Auburn, NY. He entered Yale College in 1789 but his health compelled him to leave. His subsequent private studies were impressive enough for Yale to grant him the B. A. in 1794. He was ordained over a Presbyterian Church in Morristown, NJ (1797), received the M.A. from Princeton College (1801), and chosen moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1805. He accepted a call from the church in Newark in 1809, and was chosen professor of theology in the newly-established theological seminary in Auburn, NY, (1820), first declining but then accepting their second call to that position in 1823. He remained at this post for twenty years, until his death.
