Henry Boynton Smith (1815-1877)d, "New School Presbyterian theologian and historian. Born of Unitarian parents in Portland, Maine, Smith was converted during a revival at Bowdoin College and later prepared for the ministry at Andover and Bangor seminaries. He also studied in Germany from 1838 to 1840, where he was heavily influenced by German philosophy and theology, especially that of Georg W. F. Hegel and the mediating theology of Friedrch A. G. Tholuck, Ernst W. Hengstenberg and Johann A. W. Neander. Smith was appointed professor of mental and moral philosophy at Amherst College in 1847 and moved to Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1850 to teach first church history and then systematic theology (1853-1874).
