Twenty volumes in half green morocco; lavender, cream & green marbled boards and end papers. Spines uniformly faded to a brownish-lavender tint, joints very good, some scuffing at the base of most spines. Each 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches, top page edges bright gilt, 6 spine panels adorned in gilt floral designs. Photogravure frontispieces, title pages printed in light green and brown, deckled page edges. Very good. Hardcover.
The background of this set is interesting. In 1931 a gentleman in the Schenectady area of New York State went to an estate auction. He bought a number of antique furniture items, including a very large cherry bookcase. The bookcase was full of books, which he brought home. This set sat in the bookcase from 1931 until very recently, when the estate was sold, and the grandson of the gentleman contacted us about purchasing the books, which we did.
Each volume is translated from the French into English, and has a critical Introduction.
