Rev. Joel Hawes (1789-1867), b. in Medway, Mass. He graduated at Brown in 1813, studied theology at Andover, and in 1818 was ordained pastor of the Congregational church in Hartford, Conn., of which church we was the pastor until his death almost 50 years later. In 1844 he took a missionary tour of Asia Minor and Turkey where his daughter was a missionary. He was a frequent contributor to the evangelical literature of his day, and he wrote several useful books on the Christian life.
