Quaker in origin, with the printer being notable in that group. Also, the inclusion of the separatist Quaker Elias Hicks in the excerpts indicates the same.
"As there is a spirit of inquiry and search after wisdom abroad in the world, the idea was conceived of forming a Collection of Extracts, gleaned from various authors, to suit the tastes of readers of the present time. As the days of chivalry and false honour are passing away, and those of reason and common sense taking their place, it appears much more consistent with true honour, and the dignity of a gentleman, to carry a book in his pocket, than a pistol: with these views, the following selections were made." - Preface.
Selections from many authors, including those of Rollin, Swift, Southwell, Young, John Jay, Elias Hicks, Cowper, John Locke, Goldsmith, Milton, Cicero, Pliny, Johnson, William Penn, &c.
