Martinus Becanus (1563-1624), b. Hilvarenbeek, Netherlands; d. Vienna. After receiving his degree in philosophy at the Jesuit College in Cologne, he in 1583 entered the Society of Jesus. He taught philosophy and theology in various colleges in present-day Germany and Austria. At the time of his death he was the confessor to Emperor Ferdinand II. Becanus was a chief controversialist and polemical writer in defense of the Roman Church against the Protestants of Europe. The Manuale offered here was first published at Wurzburg (1623) and went through over 20 editions.
