For instance, no. 20, "God knows the Hearts of Men" has 6 verses listed, the first with date B. C. 1817, Gen. 20:6, "Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart;" and ending with A. D. 29, Luke 16:15, "And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts."

This work was result of the studies of the Rev. James Gilruth (1793-1873), b. Belleville, VA (now WV); d. Davenport, Iowa. Rev. Gilurth was a Methodist minister at Davenport, Iowa. Gilruth was a pioneer preacher in Fairfield County, Ohio, in his youth and renowned for his great strength exhibited when he "fought the rowdies at camp meetings." - Wiseman, Pioneer Period and Pioneer People of Fairfield Co. Ohio (1901). He moved to Davenport, Iowa, in 1842.

His son, James H. Gilruth of Mount Vernon, Iowa, used his father's manuscript as the basis for this book.
