Giulio Carcano (1812-1882), "Milanese poet, playwright, and novelist. His fiction, notably the contemporary novel Angiola Maria (1839), has a moralizing, rather sentimental quality. He was the addressee of Cesare Correnti's Della letteratura rusticale, and attempted to represent the peasantry with understanding and compassion. He took part in the revolution of 1848 and later became a senator. In his retirement he translated the whole of Shakespeare (1875-82). - The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature.
