"It was in the Papal States that I studied the Roman Question. I travelled over every part of the country; I conversed with men of all opinions, examined things very closely, and collected my information on the spot." - Preface.

Edmond About concludes that the problems of the Papal States can be resolved, but the cruelties and perversities of Papal Rule must be rejected to come to that end.

Edmond François Valentin About (1828-1885), French journalist & author whose contemporaries thought similar to Voltaire due to his anti-clerical novels.

"One of the few younger authors of note who adhered to the second empire, he enjoyed the special favor of Napoleon III., and in 1870 accompanied the army of Marshal Macmahon as reporter for 'Le Soir.' In that paper, after the war, and from 1875 as editor-in-chief of the 'XIX. Siècle,' he was the champion of the Moderate Republicans. He was elected a member of the Academy in 1884." - Collier's New Encyclopedia (1921).
