Red cloth with gilt title to spine, 5 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches, binding a bit bumped & soiled with what looks like some pencil strokes on the front cover. 1912 gift inscription on ffep. 408 clean pp., light bump to pages - bottom edge near spine. Frontispiece & three additional plates. Good. Hardcover.

First published in 1882. "Should the reader ask whether this is a 'true story,' the author would say in reply that the boys, girls, men, women and places told of are real, though bearing other names, and that most of the incidents here related occurred within a hundred miles of New York City. As most of the persons introduced into this story are yet living, he has tried not to describe them or their homes too plainly...Not forgetting his own longings and struggles, when he was a boy, to be a Christian, he has tried to help other boys to become followers of Christ. He has sought, too, to show, as learned by observation, that boys can live Christian lives and yet be real boys." - Preface.
