Charlotte Maria Tucker (1821-1893), b. Middlesex, England; d. Amritsar, India. Her father was Henry St. George Tucker, twice elected chairman of the British East India Company. An evangelical Christian, Charlotte wrote stories under the pen name A. L. O. E., a Lady of England. A prolific writer of over 150 titles, many first appeared as serials in magazines before being published as books. At the age of 54 she became a missionary at Amritsar, Punjab, having taught herself Hindustani. There she was a self-supporting volunteer in the Indian Female Normal School and Instruction Society. She also worked in a boys school at Batala, and was a missionary to Indian women.
