Howard Crosby (1826-1891), great-grandson of William Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Crosby was Professor of Greek in the University of New York and from 1870-81 the Chancellor of that institution. He was ordained in 1861 and installed in 1863 as the pastor of the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. “He took an active part in the temperance movement, the Indian rights agitation, and other philanthropic and public measures. He was a member of the American committee for revision of the New Testament, was the author of the Commentary on Nehemiah in Lange’s Bible Commentary”… as well as the author of several other books.

In the Preamble the author asserts that the Ten Commandments were the only revelation of God written by Him, all other direct revelation being auditory. "It is this fact which exalts the Decalogue to the every highest rank of recorded truth."
