John Watts de Peyster (1821-1907), a native of New York City, one of the organizers of the New York City Police Department and Fire Department, an officer in the New York State Militia who was promoted to Brigadier General in 1851. He wrote extensively on military topics, his New American Tactics were used by the Union Army during the Civil War and adapted by several foreign militaries.
