Scarce First American Edition, The Works of Jonathan Edwards

We recently sold this set and thought you might want to have a look at it.  They have become quite difficult to find complete.

Edwards, Jonathan. The Works of President Edwards in Eight Volumes (complete). Worcester: Isaiah Thomas, Jun., 1808-1809. First American Edition. [8662]

Eight volumes in full calf, black calf title labels & volume no. labels to spines, with gilt lines, all bindings very good to good with very good joints, no cracks, 20.5 cm (8 x 5 inches), speckled page edges. Each with a mid-twentieth century private bookplate, 1829 former owner's signature on the ffeps. Spines with worming & crazing in some volumes (particularly vol. 2); some edgewear, v. 8 worn at top of spine. Frontispiece portrait engraving by Abner Reed in vol. i. 515, 491, 548, 496, 504, 508, 502, 514 [10] p. subscriber's names. A very handsome set that displays well. Good. Full calf.

This first American edition of Jonathan Edwards's works is scarce on the market. This set we discovered at a recent auction in the Midwest.

Roberts, Revival Literature: An Annotated Bibliography, no. 1858. "The preface of this first American edition is signed by Samuel Austin."
